No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
